Get to grips with Kaiser Lee board, a unique, versatile material that allows you to make your own moulds for slumping, open face casting and sculptural art works, taught by its inventor Petra Kaiser. Kaiser Lee board is easy to cut, carve and shape, making it the perfect casting medium. Nothing needs to be mixed, it is ready to use, and it can be re-used countless times.
On this intensive four day course, work through a series of projects and techniques that will smash through the limitations and barriers that exist when using commercially made moulds. Realise that you can produce the shapes that you imagine and make a selection of unique, re-useable moulds of your own design.
During this process, you will also develop your fusing skills. Using WIssmach 96 and System 96 glass, discover Petra's all-in-one firing process from conception to finished article, as well as reversed fusing techniques, making confetti and frit cookies, vitragraph stringers and 'glass dyeing' with UGC enamel paints.
During the 4 days you will get a thorough understanding of the nearly endless possibilities of kiln forming with a material that doesn't need to primed, and doesn't absorb heat like other mould materials. This means it doesn't interfere with the heating and subsequent cooling process of your projects, ensuring even heat distribution and less stress on the glass. On the first day you will make a few building blocks that can be used in a variety of ways to create glass design elements which will be useful for other projects throughout the course. The Kaiser Lee Board mould system requires a different approach to glass fusing. Since nearly everything is possible, the idea comes first and the mould is second. Each piece is part of a whole moulding system. Drape Triangles will be used in different configurations. You will also learn how to cut one piece of board 30cm x 30cm x 2.5cm into a multi tasking mould to make reverse fusing moulds, drop out moulds, bowl moulds and casting moulds. Add a few strips of KLB and your mould will again change completely. The moulds are only the tool to create stunning glass art. Petra will use techniques like flow casting, vitrigraph stringers, pattern bars, painting with frit and enamels and several other subtle design methods to show you a variety of ways to add interest to your glass art.
Petra will be visiting us from Florida, USA, don't miss her!
Petra Kaiser has taught workshops all over the world, you may know her from her popular books, Introduction to Glass Fusing, Fuse It and Glass Forming with the Mold Block System. She specializes in the creating and developing of new forms and products. One of the latest and most challenging techniques is the combination of cast glass elements and fairly thin glass - only 1 to 2 layers thick. Petra will share her ideas and techniques that she has discovered over the past 20 years of kiln forming glass via slide show, samples of her exquisite artwork and demonstrations.
