A 5-Day Exploratory Masterclass in a variety of Pâte de Verre techniques with artist Estelle Dean. Produce a range of sample pieces before progressing to four major projects, experimenting with design and building techniques, structure, cold-working and firing programs. Your pieces will be wet fired during the course so that you can see the results before cleaning and cold-working them to a professional standard.
You will take part in discussions and watch many demonstrations throughout the course, so that you get the best grounding in the core skills for this technique and a thorough knowledge of the various tools and processes associated with Pâte de Verre and other casting techniques. You will also be encouraged to make your own tools that will help you transfer your design ideas from images in your head to reality in the kiln.
Pâte de Verre is a form of kiln casting and literally translated means ‘glass paste’. In this process, finely crushed glass is mixed with a binding material. The resultant paste is applied to the inner surface of a negative mould forming a coating. After the coated mould is fired at the appropriate temperature the glass is fused creating a hollow object that can have thick or thin walls depending on the thickness of the Pâte de Verre layers.
You will design and create moulds and build your pieces from layers of frit. Learn how to use the kiln to manipulate the frit, utilising its texture and fragility, while also ensuring that your pieces are going to be strong and durable.
There will be a maximum of 8 students.
