Lampwork Bead-Making Taster Day

We offer a taster day workshop, with award-winning glass artist Sue Webb, to get you started making your own glass beads. You will learn a range of techniques, which you should be experienced enough to continue with after the course.

This is a LEVEL ONE course - Suitable for beginners.

What does the course cover?

You will be introduced to all the equipment and safety procedures and then be shown how to melt glass rods in a flame to form a basic bead. You will progress onto various patterns and embellishments, such as dots, flowers, bubbles and hearts. You will add detail and texture using frit and various tools, learn how to make a snake bead, and be taught how to pull your own 'stringers' and 'twisties' which can be used to decorate beads later.

You will also learn how to encase your beads in clear glass, which can create stunning effects and give your beads depth. You will have time to ask questions and practice your favourite design skills under the tutor's guidance.

Your beads will be annealed in our specialist Kiln Care bead annealing kilns and will be ready for collection the next day. If you don’t live locally, your beads will be posted out to you at no extra charge.

Our bead making facilities are available for hire, so you can come into the studio and practice in your own time once the tutor has agreed that you're suitably experienced.

Classes are restricted to a minimum of six students to ensure individual attention.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing but yourself and a sturdy pair of closed-toed shoes. If you have long hair, please wear it tied back, and avoid wearing synthetic clothes or long flowing sleeves. (Short sleeves or tight fitting long sleeves are best.) All your glass, materials, tools and use of kilns, along with light refreshments are provided.

We will provide a delicious cold lunch from Pret a Manger as well as light refreshments throughout the day. Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary requirements. We will do our best to cater to everyone but this cannot always be guaranteed.

What are the course times?

The course starts at 10am and runs until approximately 4pm depending on progress. There is a chance that it may overrun depending on progress.

We will try to make our courses accessible to all however if you have any disabilities or physical limitations of any kind we ask that you discuss it with us before booking.

Booked on this course to refine my skills and correct any bad habits early on. Small group teaching by Sue who was an excellent teacher. I met my objectives for attending and learnt new skills and approaches too. If you are new to lampwork or like me want to brush up on some techniques then book yourself on this course and fill your boots.
