Five Weeks of Flow - Advanced Fusing with Simon Alderson
This five week course (one day per week) will give experienced fusers the opportunity to explore advanced fusing techniques. Observe how glass flows within the kiln and experiment with a range of techniques to manipulate glass in exciting new ways to make one-of-a-kind fused artwork.
Students will create slabs of glass and play with pattern bar and flow bar techniques which will then be cut and cold-worked using our brand new linishers and saws - then re-fused into new and interesting patterns.
The possibilities are endless!
Materials are not included in the course price. Some practice materials will be provided, but you will be required to buy your own materials as you go along. The Creative Glass Guild shop is adjacent to our teaching studios and you will receive a 10% discount in the shop while on the course (excludes power tools, kilns, sale items and books). Superb exploration of how to "go with the flow"By Margaret Saunders
If you get the chance to book onto this course of 5 weekly sessions with Simon Alderson, go for it. I have just finished the Feb-Mar 2018 course and can honestly say that it has been one of the best and most enjoyable fusing courses I have attended. Simon is a brilliant tutor who clearly knows his subject inside out and demonstrates his passion for warm glass with both humour and (lots of) patience. He took the time to explain each technique in detail but encouraged each student to bring their own ideas to life, with some gentle guidance when neessary. No question was left unanswered and he was happy to clarify anything that we weren't sure about - several times if necessary. The group was an ideal size with each of us able to get the time we needed to address our queries but also able to discuss ideas amongst ourselves and to encourage each other.
It was fascinating to explore in further detail what can be done with warm glass - I had never realised quite how many different things could be done starting from one basic pattern bar. Simon was even brave enough to let us rake our glass at temperatures in excess of 900 C - not something I expected to have the chance to try (shh - don't tell Debbie!). It was great to be able to have a look each week at the pieces we had each been able to create in the earlier sessions and to see the progress everyone was making. I particularly enjoyed the highlight of being able to watch our "drop-outs" as they slowly moved closer and closer to the bottom of the kiln - never quite sure which one was going to reach it first.
So - if you want to find out more about the magic of warm glass and to explore some exciting new techniques and extend your fusing skills, this is definitely the course for you
P.S. Simon's cooking skills are almost as legendary as his glass skills; he makes a beautifully tangy lemon polenta cake.
