SilkeMat Basics and Much More with Barbara Cashman
We are thrilled to be welcoming SilkeMat inventor Barbara Cashman to the UK to teach two masterclasses. This is the beginner course, you can find details of the more advanced course here.
Welcome to the fascinating world of SilkeMat. Push the boundaries of glass form on this three- day course with SilkeMat inventor Barbara Cashman. Discover how this wonderful material can be used to make multi-use moulds of your own design. You'll create vitrigraph moulds, potmelt moulds, slumping moulds and kiln-castings. Some of the pieces you make will be fired in multiple SilkeMat moulds. For instance, the glass formed from your pot melt mould can be slumped into a plate or organic shape in another SilkeMat mould of your own making. You’ll design and create a variety of works – and have the moulds to keep afterwards! As it will be the Christmas season, one of the projects will have a seasonal theme.
Bonus: If you have never pulled hot glass stringers from a kiln, you have an experience in store as you play (safely!) with the vitrigraph kiln.
SilkeMat is a non-carcinogenic kiln forming blanket available exclusively in the UK at Creative Glass Guild. It can be used to create re-useable forms for slumping glass. The optional rigizider, (sold separately), provides the option to create repeat slumps of the same forms. As it is a non-carcinogenic fibre, it can be cut and handled with minimal concern.
